UNRULY TWINE
The year is 2000 and I really had this thing about trees... and about plants. This project was one of the most rewarding to make, regardless of its tragic end, or maybe because of its tragic end. I used self-portraits which I had shot in the company of an old apple tree the previous fall. In the spring I planted bindweed seeds and watched the seedlings grow. The photographs and the plants were put onto a white willow trunk in Kaisaniemi park in Helsinki. I would have loved to see the bindweed grow but due to vandalism the growing of the artwork was not possible to document. Seeing this installation now, twenty five years later, I feel the park was not the right place for such personal photographs. I wonder why I wished to expose myself? The artistic process becomes a representation of human life, our longing, our vulnerability, our fear of being harmed, and our urge to harm.
